A level 5 drywall finish is the smoothest wall surface you can get - a full skim coat over the entire wall, not just the seams - and whether you actually need it comes down to one question: how is light going to hit that wall? Drywall Finish Levels, Explained
The drywall industry rates finish quality on a scale from 0 to 5:
- Level 0-2 - Bare minimum taping, typically used behind finished surfaces like tile or in spaces that will be covered entirely (garages, storage areas).
- Level 3 - One coat of joint compound over tape and fasteners, usually a base for heavy textures.
- Level 4 - The standard for most homes. Two coats of compound, sanded smooth, ready for flat or eggshell paint. This is what's behind the walls in the vast majority of houses.
- Level 5 - Everything in Level 4, plus a thin skim coat of joint compound applied across the entire wall or ceiling surface, not just the seams. The result is a uniformly smooth, imperfection-free surface from edge to edge.
Why the Skim Coat Matters
Without that full skim coat, the joint compound only sits over the taped seams and screw heads - meaning those spots have a slightly different texture and porosity than the rest of the drywall paper. Under flat paint in normal lighting, you'd never notice. But under raking light (windows, recessed can lights, or anything hitting the wall at a low angle) or with glossier paint sheens, those subtle differences show up as visible flashing or texture variation - especially frustrating on a wall you've just spent money finishing.

When Level 5 Is Worth It
We recommend a level 5 finish when a space has one or more of these:
- Satin, semi-gloss, or gloss paint sheens, which reflect light and reveal texture inconsistencies a flat finish would hide.
- Heavy natural light or strategically placed accent lighting that rakes across the wall.
- A dramatic, unbroken accent wall or vaulted ceiling meant to be a visual focal point.
- High-end kitchens, primary bathrooms, or great rooms where finish quality is part of the overall design statement.
When Level 4 Is Genuinely Fine
For bedrooms, closets, hallways, and most walls finished in flat or matte paint under standard lighting, a properly done level 4 finish looks great and is the right call. Paying for level 5 everywhere in a home adds real labor cost for a difference most people won't ever notice in those rooms. What It Costs
Because a level 5 finish requires skim-coating, sanding, and often a second pass to get a truly flat, uniform surface, it takes meaningfully more labor time than a standard level 4 finish - expect it to cost more per square foot. The right approach is usually targeted: apply it to the walls and ceilings where lighting or sheen will actually show the difference, and use level 4 everywhere else.
Can you add a level 5 finish to existing walls, or only new construction?
It's most efficient during a remodel when the drywall is already exposed, but a skim coat can also be applied over existing painted drywall in a renovation, provided the surface is properly prepped.
Does level 5 completely eliminate visible seams?
It gets very close. No drywall finish is perfectly seamless under every possible lighting condition, but level 5 is the closest you can get, which is why it's the standard for the highest-end finish work.
