How to Safely Remove a Load-Bearing Wall

What makes a wall load-bearing, why you can't just knock it down, and how an open floor plan actually gets built safely.

Short answer: yes, a load-bearing wall can come out - but only after a structural engineer redirects the weight it was carrying, not before. Here's exactly what that involves, and why skipping a step here can mean a sagging floor six months down the road.

What Makes a Wall "Load-Bearing"

A load-bearing wall carries structural weight from the roof, floors above, or both, down into the foundation. A partition wall, by contrast, just divides space and can typically be removed without any structural consequence. The trouble is you often can't tell which is which just by looking at it - load-bearing walls don't always run perpendicular to floor joists, and not every wall along an exterior line is load-bearing either.

This is exactly why guessing is risky. We've seen homeowners assume a wall was "just a partition" because it looked thin or didn't line up with anything obvious upstairs, only to find out otherwise once it was opened up.

Why You Can't Just Remove It

Removing a load-bearing wall without properly redirecting the weight it was carrying can lead to sagging floors, cracking drywall and ceilings, doors and windows that no longer close right, and in serious cases, structural failure. None of that shows up immediately - it can take weeks or months to become obvious, by which point the fix is far more invasive (and expensive) than it would have been to do it right from the start.

How It's Actually Done

  1. Structural assessment. A structural engineer evaluates the wall, the load it's carrying, and how that load needs to be redirected.
  2. Permitting. Ada and Canyon County both require permits for structural work. We handle the submission and inspections so the work is fully code-compliant.
  3. Temporary shoring. Before anything is removed, temporary supports hold the structure in place.
  4. Header beam installation. A properly sized beam (steel or engineered lumber, per the engineer's specification) is installed to carry the load that the wall used to support, transferring it to the framing on either side.
  5. Wall removal and finish work. Once the beam is carrying the load, the wall comes out, and the ceiling, flooring, and any electrical or HVAC that ran through the wall get rerouted and finished.

This Is Not a DIY Project

Beyond the safety risk, unpermitted structural work can create real problems at resale - a home inspector or appraiser who spots an altered wall with no permit on file can hold up or kill a sale entirely. Doing it right the first time, with an engineer's sign-off and proper permits, protects both your home's safety and its value.
